| 太湖石的形成，首先要有石灰岩。苏州太湖地区广泛分布2~3亿年前的石碳、二叠、三叠纪时代形成的石灰岩，成为太湖石的丰富的物质基础。尤以三亿年前石炭纪时，深海中沉积形成的层厚、质纯的石灰岩最佳。往往能形成质量上乘的太湖石。 The formation of Taihu stone requires limestone first.
